HSE Syllabus First Aid at WorkA three day course that meets the current Health & Safety Executive syllabus(First Aid) Regulations 1981. The course is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for qualifying First Aid personnel in the workplace.
This course is delivered over a minimum of three days (18 hours) and will provide students with in-depth information and skills on how to provide effective treatment and care to a person, or persons that become ill or injured whilst at work. The programme has a large emphasis on practical application of the skills learnt and ample opportunity is provided for hands-on practice in a relaxed, low stress environment.
Candidates will receive training in a wide range of first aid skills including:
- The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs
- The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient
- The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding
- The ability to recognise and treat a patient in shock
- The keeping of simple records following an accident at work
- Students will also learn to provide care for patients who have:
1. suffered a burn or scald
2. injured bones, muscles or joints
3. been poisoned by ingestion or inhalation of a substance or gas
4. suffered an injury to the eye
5. signs & symptoms of a major illness e.g. heart attack
Candidates are required to undertake an assessment of knowledge and practical skill application on the final day of the course.
Course Duration: 3 Days (minimum 18 hours)

A two-day re-qualification programme that meets the current Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. The course is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for qualifying First Aid personnel in the workplace.
The Re-qualification course is restricted to students who have previously attended a full First Aid at Work programme. In order to attend you will need to bring a copy of your current FAW certificate.
Candidates will receive refresher training in a wide range of first aid skills including:
- The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs
- The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient
- The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding
- The ability to recognise and treat a patient in shock
- The keeping of simple records following an accident at work
- Students will also learn to provide care for patients who have:
1. suffered a burn or scald

A one day (6 Hour) Emergency First Aid course designed to give the student a basic knowledge of first aid within the workplace.
The course syllabus meets the requirements set by the Health & Safety Executive and is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for training of candidates in first aid for low risk environments.
The content covers the basic essentials required to provide emergency care to a patient. Candidates will receive training in a range of first aid skills including:
- The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs.
- The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient.
- The recognition and treatment of a person in seizure.
- The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- The ability to recognise and safely treat a patient who is choking.
- The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding.
- The keeping of simple records following an accident at work.
Successful candidates will be awarded a plastic qualification card on completion and receive a full colour A4 certificate awarded by WorkSafe Training Systems.

A half day AED course that meets the recommendations of both the UK & European Resuscitation Council for First Responder Defibrillation.
Ideally candidates will already hold a HSE First Aid at Work certificate but full training in CPR will be covered. An AED unit is an integral part of the course and should be in-situ or available before training takes place.
AED Programme Content includes:
- An overview of Ventricular Fibrillation and the use of defibrillators.
- Emphasis on early intervention, early CPR and the importance of the 'Chain of Survival'.
- Lots of hands-on practice for students using training AED's.
- Scenario practice sessions tailored to portray similar situations to which the student may have to respond.
- Maintenance and troubleshooting of AED's.
A final assessment of knowledge and skill is a requirement of this programme. Successful candidates will be awarded a plastic qualification card on completion and receive a full colour A4 certificate awarded by WorkSafe Training Systems.
The qualification is valid for 12 months but refresher training is recommended every six months in line with Resuscitation Council guidance

The Paediatric and Early Years course is designed for people who are working, or intend to work in the childcare sector. The programme syllabus meets all the requirements of OFSTED & EYFS for Early Years First Aid Provision.
The course also complies with the recommendations of the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Paediatric and Early Years First Aid includes resuscitation skills for Adults, Infants and Children. Candidates will receive training in a range of first aid skills including:
- The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs.
- The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient.
- The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding.
- Recognition of common childhood complaints and illnesses and appropriate care.
- Developing an effective emergency plan for when emergencies occur.
- The keeping of simple records following an accident in the workplace/care setting.

Emergency First Aid at Work with Paediatric BLS is a 1 day first aid training programme of minimum 7 contact hours designed to provide candidates with the HSE approved Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification with additional the addition of infant and child resuscitation skills.
The syllabus follows guidance issued by the HSE for persons providing first aid in low risk environments or where the likelihood of accidents is low and emergency services are readily available. It is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74.

Leading groups of people in remote areas, or participating in outdoor activities can bring with it unknown hazards. Common injuries sustained in the outdoors range from simple cuts and grazes to broken limbs, head and back injuries and hypothermia. Being prepared to deal with any emergency should always form part of your emergency plan and you should be prepared to deal effectively with first aid related incidents when working in this environment.
Delays in emergency service attendance times, lack of effective communication and difficulty in evacuation of casualties all present additional problems for the first aider when working outdoors. The focus of the First Aid for Outdoor Education programme addresses these issues. Students receive training in providing first aid for longer periods than would be expected in more urban environments.
Techniques such as splinting, ongoing casualty management and evacuation are all covered during the programme in addition to more general first aid techniques. The course is delivered with lots of practical scenarios and is ideally suited to a residential style two day programme with access to outdoors for the practical element of the programme.
This course has been designed to meet the content requirements of BELA, MLTE, BCU and RYA and is also an excellent programme to meets the requirements of leadership for Duke of Edinburgh Award, Scout and Guide Associations
This course covers the basic essentials required to provide emergency care to a patient where emergency services may be remote or delayed from the incident location. Candidates will receive training in a range of first aid skills including:
- Assess and prioritise a first aid incident in remote areas, including multiple casualties scenarios
- Deal with an unconscious casualty
- Perform basic life support
- Control bleeding and manage shock
- Monitor and record casualties condition
- Recognise and deal with a wide range of common injuries & illness's
- Recognise and manage hypothermia and other cold related injuries
- Practice casualty immobilisation and evacuation techniques
- Casualty handover to professional persons/services
- Maintain first aid kits both for base & off site use
Candidates who successfully complete the course will be awarded an A4 certificate and plastic qualification 'wallet' card. The qualification is valid for three years.
